Check a VIN

What is a VIN check?

A VIN check uses a vehicle’s 17-character Vehicle Identification Number — stamped on the dashboard, driver’s door jamb and title — to look up what’s known about that specific car. The VIN encodes the make, model year, engine and plant, and links to public records like manufacturer safety recalls.

Running a check before you buy a used car helps you confirm the seller’s claims and spot red flags early. VIN Report USA decodes the specifications and open NHTSA recalls for free, and a full history report adds title, accident, odometer, salvage, theft and lien records where they’re available.

Questions, answered

What a VIN check can and can't tell you when buying a used car in the U.S.

  • A Vehicle Identification Number is a unique 17-character code stamped on every road vehicle. It encodes the manufacturer, the make, model and year, the engine and body type, and the plant where the car was built.

  • The three most common places are the lower driver's-side corner of the windshield, a sticker inside the driver's door jamb, and your insurance and vehicle registration documents. On many cars it is also under the hood or in the trunk near the spare wheel.

  • Yes. Decoding the vehicle's specifications and listing open safety recalls is completely free and needs no account. Full vehicle-history reports (accident, title and odometer records) are a separate paid product that is launching soon.

  • Yes. VINs follow the same 17-character standard nationwide, so the decoder reads U.S.-market vehicles from every state the same way. The manufacturer codes inside a VIN stay consistent across the country.

  • It decodes the make, model, model year, body style, engine and drivetrain, and manufacturing details from the VIN, and lists any open manufacturer safety recalls for that make, model and year.

  • Not in the free report. Accident, title-brand, odometer and theft-check data come from separate records. On this site those sections are shown today as clearly-labelled samples, and we never present sample data as facts about a real car.

  • A recall is issued when a manufacturer or safety regulator identifies a defect that needs a free repair. An open recall means the fix has not yet been recorded as completed. Always confirm recall status and repairs with a franchised dealer for that brand.

  • Absolutely. A VIN check is a paperwork starting point. It cannot see rust, worn brakes, a tired clutch or hidden collision repairs. Budget for an independent pre-purchase inspection before you buy any used vehicle.

  • Yes. Every free report has a Download PDF button that generates a clean, printable document with the VIN, decoded specifications and any recalls, so you can keep it or share it with a mechanic or seller.

  • The decode happens on demand for your report and those pages are not indexed by search engines. If you attach a photo of the car, it stays on your own device and is never uploaded to us.

  • The specifications come from the public NHTSA vPIC database, which is highly reliable for make, model, year and build details. Optional equipment and trim can vary, so treat the decode as a strong baseline and confirm specifics with the seller.

  • No. VIN Report USA is an independent tool. We are not affiliated with any government body, vehicle manufacturer, dealership or auction house, and reports are based only on the records available to us.
